Biography:
Sir Jacob Epstein (b. 1880 d. 1959)
By the summer of 1957, Epstein's heart was in bad condition. kathleen had to look after him tactfully without letting him suspect he was in a precarious state; and she persuaded him against his will to take a holiday in Scotland. On his return to London, Epstein modelled the Third Portrait of Kitty, his last. Kitty is shown with bare shoulders, the right shoulder higher than left and short hair which radiates in neat flames from a point above her forehead. Her face, tense and thin with its chiselled lips and scooped eyes. suggests a tragic mask.
