Biography:

Maximillian Feuerring
(b. 1896, Poland d. 1985, Australia)
Painter, Veteran, Educator

Maximmilian Feuerring paintings can be housed within the avant- garde Polish colourist movement, which is considered as one of the most controversial movement in Polish art in the 1920's. The controversy arose due to the movement's focus on modernist objectivity in painting, rather than a political or social description of the times (1). His work is characterised by a painterly resolution of bright colours over tone; composition over observation; and rich surface texture. This painting belongs to his collection of works post his emigration from Poland in 1950, where he had survived years as a prisoner of war in WWII. It has been mentioned that following his immigration to Australia, the colour in his work took on a new theme, influenced by his experience of war, which was 'the search for survival.' (2). Several members of his family, including his wife perished in German concentration camps, giving the viewer a deeply empathetic feeling with regards to this theme. Throughout his life, Feuerring not only focused on his career as a painter but as an educator, teaching at Universitas International, Munich (1947- 1950) and at his private studios in Bellevue Hill and Woollahra, Sydney. He is represented nationally in all of the State public galleries as well as several collections overseas.
