Matthew Perceval was born in Melbourne in 1945 and grew up surrounded by painters, sculptors, and ceramicists. His father John was a painter of vigorous landscapes and his mother Mary is a member of the Boyd family of artists.
Matthew Perceval has held over 30 solo exhibitions. In 2007 a collection of Matthew Perceval's portrait paintings was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra.
