William 'Bill' Coleman
b. 1922 Ballarat Victoria d. 1992 Melbourne
Designer, Painter and Cartographer

Bill Coleman pushed the boundaries of form and technique in the aim of creating a counterbalance of opposites in his paintings. He successfully presented harmonious contrasts of techniques in his visual descriptions nudes, domestic interiors and street scenes, skilfully riding a fine line between abstraction and realism. Coleman's training was through RMIT (Mel) and the George Bell School, the latter's influence is identified in his modernist style of painting. Bell received critical acclaim through three major retrospectives of his work: Bendigo, Ballarat and Sale Galleries in 1986; 'A Lifetime of Works 1949- 1987' at Holland Fine art (Syd) in 1987 and in 1989 at the Gryphon Gallery at the Melbourne University.
