Harold Frederick Weaver Hawkins (b.1893 d.1977)
Born in Sydenham, London 1893 Harold Weaver Hawkins was the son of an architect and first studied formal art education at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. In 1916, when enlisted in the Queen Westminster rifles, Hawkins was severely injured while serving on the Western front and subsequently lost the use of his right hand. Despite his injuries, Hawkins went on the enjoy a well received career as a painter and printmaker. Hawkins and his young family emigrated to Sydney in 1935 and it has been noted that the move influenced the subject mater from depictions of working life and leisure to everyday domestic scenes. Hawkins was relatively unknown until the AGNSW held a major retrospective of his work in 1976.
