Biography:

Sidney Nolan OM b.1917 d.1992
Painter, printmaker

Sidney Nolan is arguably the best painter Australia has brought to the world stage of art. Nolan spent his early years pairing amongst the seminal and well regarded creative coterie of Joy Hester, Albert Tucker, Arthur Boyd, Charles Blackman, Sunday and John Reed. Nolan painted a wide range of personal interpretations of historical and legendary Australian icons like the infamous bushranger Ned Kelly. Nolan is said to have been inspired stylistically by the works of Picasso, Matisse and Rousseau where their influence of Modernistic ideals are quite apparent in application of paint, subject matter and naive style. In 1967, Nolan had a major retrospective at the Art Gallery of New South Wales which was accompanied by the biographical documentary film This Dreaming, Spinning Thing.
