Jenny Watson (b. 1951 Melbourne)
Jenny Watson is an adept painter who initiated her professional career with formative training at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School in 1972, where she finished with a Diploma of Painting. The following year saw Watson develop her knowledge base with a Diploma of Education at the State College of Victoria .
Among the stable of artists at seminal galleries Roslyn Oxley9 and Anna Schwartz, Watson has experienced a commercial career befitting of an artist of her capability. Alongside her Australian commercial success, Watson has exhibited extensively abroad most notably as the sole artist to represent Australia at the Venice Bienniale in 1993. Watson has held solo exhibitions at most major Australian public institutions such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales; National Gallery Victoria. Her work is held the public collections of the Yokahama Gallery, Tokyo; Artbank, Australia; Ulmer Museum, Germany and the private collections at Chartwell Collection, New Zealand; the Dresdner Bank, Frankfurt, Germany amongst several others.
A respected educator, Watson is currently the Adjunct Professor, Painting Department, Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Her artistic cv boasts many prominent prizes such as the Portia Geach Portrait prize, a Gold Medal from the Indian Trienniale, New Dehli, and the Newcastle Art Prize which she shared with another leading Australian Contemporary Artist, Mike Parr.
