Diana Crooke, Australian b.1954 Thursday Island
Diana Crooke derives her personal visual language from her rich upbringing in Yorkey Knob, Far North Queensland. Because of her early life experiences in this remote tropical community and her relationship with the local Torres Strait community, Crooke intuitively embodies the relaxed, simplistic lifestyles of Pacific Islander culture through her colourful, bold paintings. Formatively, one can see an influence of Paul Gaugain, notably the illustration of exotic cultures articulated in a post impressionist style. Launching her professional artistic career in 1981 in Cairns at the Upside Down Gallery, Crooke continues to exhibit frequently and her work is held in many international collections.
